Investors should take into consideration the economic value of biodiversity

Eurosif (European Sustainable Investment Forum) and oekom research have jointly published a report highlighting critical business risks and opportunities in various industries linked with biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Highlights include:

According to estimates by WWF, the number of existing species has fallen by 30% between 1970 and 2005.

The value of services provided by nature in protected areas alone is estimated at €3.7 trillion per annum (source: “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” TEEB).

The impact of the continual extinction of species and the reduced capacity of ecosystems to function properly are highly significant for companies. For example, the economic value of the pollination of cultivated plants by bees is estimated at €29 to €74 billion per annum worldwide.

The report details five industries that either have a high impact on the biodiversity & ecological system or whose activities largely depend on these systems for their livelihood, and their associated direct and indirect risks: Agriculture & Food, Extractive Industries, Paper & Forestry, Real Estate & Infrastructure and Tourism.

Eurosif partnered with oekom research for the research side of the Biodiversity report. The thematic note was presided over by a steering committee of financial analysts and NGO representatives to debate the issues and develop ways to present the stakeholder and financial points of view. The steering committee included representatives from ASSET4, Dexia Asset Management, ECPI, Fortis Investments, GES Investment Services and WWF.

Matt Christensen, Executive Director of Eurosif, says:“Biodiversity loss and the decline in ecosystem services are risks for many industries. However, if quantified and managed as part of a greater social and environmental management system, market opportunities may open up. For the financial services sector, these may include opportunities for new financial products linked to carbon, banking services or sustainability funds with a focus on biodiversity and environmental technology.”

Rolf D Häßler, Director Business Development, from oekom research states:“Even though it remains challenging to provide a precise value on biodiversity risks, companies which include this as part of their risk management will be ahead of their peers. A key priority is to identify, measure, and disclose the biodiversity impacts of businesses, both positive and negative.”

These Eurosif briefings aim to guide policy makers, mainstream and specialist SRI investors, pension fund trustees, and companies understand risks that are not consistently integrated into traditional financial analysis, but which have the potential to influence companies’ shareholder value and fund managers’ investment decisions.

Eurosif’s biodiversity report will be followed by reports on Banking, Remuneration / Long-term incentives and Infrastructure this year.

Statement on the USA´s termination of the Paris Climate Agreement

On 1 June 2017, US President Donald Trump announced the USA’s intention to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement at the earliest possible moment. With this, the dismantling of the country’s climate-protection endeavours, which already began at the start of his term of office, has been given new impetus. The USA is regarded as the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHG) worldwide. The USA pulling out of the Paris Agreement will decelerate the reduction in global emissions and development of renewable energies, and could also jeopardize the achievement of the 1.5°C target agreed upon in Paris.

Emissions at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles

In September 2015, a study conducted by the General German Automobile Club (ADAC) revealed that the Fiat 500X model emitted more than six times more NOx than under EU-testing standards when being tested using the UN-developed test method (WLTC), which better represents real driving conditions.

The company was not accused of illegal behaviour (e.g. use of defeat devices) by public authorities at that time. In February 2016, however, media reported that independent testing of a Fiat Chrysler 500X 2015 model (Euro 6 diesel) showed that the SUV’s NOx emissions ranged between 11 and 22 times the legal European limits when tested with a ‚warm' engine. Result of the presidential election in the US - impact on the country rating

The 2016 presidential election in the United States finished with an unexpected victory for Donald Trump, winning 289 of the necessary 270 electoral votes. The victory leaves the United States and the world plunging into an uncertain future,. Donald Trump’s presidency will also pose significant threats to global sustainability challenges represented in the oekom research country rating.

Trump rejected climate change as a ‘hoax’ allegedly created to dampen US competitiveness. Once in office, he would cut all payments to global warming programmes and cancel the Paris Agreement. Without the United States’ participation the agreement might become irrelevant. Lire la suite en anglais

oekom research publishes Industry Focus for the Construction industry

The Construction industry encompasses businesses whose core activities consist of planning and building houses, roads, bridges and industrial complexes.

oekom Industry Focus Construction
From a sustainability perspective, this industry continues to be confronted with numerous challenges: the United Nations, for example, estimate that around 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions arise from the usage of buildings and infrastructure facilities. Other examples such as the often-precarious safety measures which are found in some construction projects and have caused multiple fatal accidents, or corruption, as confirmed by e.g. recent revelations under the title “The Bribe Factory”, show that these problems are more than just isolated incidents in the industry. United Kingdom to leave EU

The United Kingdom voted for leaving the European Union (EU) in a referendum on June 23. With 51.9% of the British voters in favour of the “Leave”-campaign which became widely known under the name “Brexit”, the UK government is now tasked with entering lengthy negotiations with the EU on the process of withdrawal and future mutual relationships.

After announcing his resignation on the morning following the vote, the incumbent British Prime Minister, David Cameron, passed the responsibility for formally starting the withdrawal process to his successor in office, who will be determined until October. Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty stipulates the scenario for a member state’s disintegration from the EU. Accordingly, the government of the state willing to leave needs to notify the European Council of its intention and in return a qualified majority of the Council (without the requesting member state) needs to mandate the European Commission with the initiation of negotiations on an agreement for the future framework under which the relationship between the leaving member state and the European Union will be concluded. Unaoil under suspicion of corruption

On 31 March 2016, the Huffington Post and Fairfax Media released a three-part series titled “The Bribe Factory”, which is the result of a six-month investigation based on leaked internal documents from Unaoil, a company that officially acts as a consultancy or lobbyist in the oil and gas sector. Yet, as the leaked emails revealed, Unaoil actually tries to get contracts for its customers by channelling bribes to decision-makers in state and private companies. The US Department of Justice (DOJ), FBI, UK National Crime Agency and Australian Federal Police began joint investigations into the allegations after the report’s release.

According to the leaked documents, Unaoil’s client base includes companies mainly from the construction, machinery, and oil & gas services sectors. The report focuses on some companies and details their wrongdoing between 2003 and 2012. Lire la suite en anglais

Manipulation of fuel economy tests at Mitsubishi

On April 20, Mitsubishi Motors admitted that CO2 emissions of vehicles had been manipulated in official tests of the company. Employees of Mitsubishi falsified tyre inflation pressure values and thus improved the test results artificially. About 600,000 vehicles are currently affected by these manipulations.

In the oekom Corporate Rating, the company has stood out for years because of its vast intransparency regarding sustainability issues. This also applies to the fleet consumption of the vehicles, measured in grams of CO2/km. Due to the absence or inadequacy of this information, the company performs well below average.

For the European Union countries alone, the use of tax havens results in up to a trillion euros in lost tax revenues every year. The (resource-rich) developing and newly industrialised countries, which the transfer of company profits to tax havens deprives of urgently needed tax revenues, are even more severely affected. Besides the loss of tax revenues, other negative effects of the existence and use of tax havens include the threat they pose to the stability of the international financial system and the support they provide for criminal and terrorist activities.
